TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I have felt for quite a while that what we in the profession are obliged to
do is make sure that standards for the different levels of titles are
clearly outlined and set by some sort of governing body - one rather obvious
choice for a governing body would be the STC, since they purport to look out
for of our many other interests already. When we are outlining the set of
qualities that a senior writer is to exhibit, rather than mundanely focus
on specific skills and duties that would be expected of a senior writer, we
ought to, instead focus on the abstract qualities a senior writer should
possess. Don't you think?
Who would we look to model said abstract focus after? I contend that we need
look no further than the Knighthood of King Arthur's round table. In this
esteemed order of Knights, the requirements to become one included such
notions as nobility, virtue, and valor. Those possessing these qualities "to
a marked degree" were welcomed to King Arthur?s court at Camelot.
Having given the example, I would now suggest that we in the profession do
everything we can to identify and present with a quest of some sort, those
intermediate technical writers that possess nobility, virtue, and valour -
to a marked degree mind you - and there upon immediately induct them into
the Knighthood of senior writership.
