Anon asked about getting a raise: "However, it would mean a 13%
increase. Is this a pipe dream?"

I got a 27% raise after one year, because my starting salary was so low,
and I had become a valuable member of the team. So 13% isn't necessarily
a pipe dream. Just before my review, I gave copies of salary surveys to
my boss, highlighting my skills, education and experience levels for my
geographical area. They knew that salary was a key point for me and they
wanted to keep me.

You might want to mention what was discussed when you accepted the job.
However, I wouldn't trust what the employer said in a salary
negotiation, no matter how well-intentioned. Next time I would advise
getting it in writing. An "understanding" is subject to all kinds of
interpretation.
