May I suggest that you use a combination of STYLE and customized numbering
(numbering or outline). In styles, either create new styles for each
"level," or use something like Headline 1, Headline 2 (if you are not using
that style for headlines), ... (apparently you need only two levels,
starting with "DEF 1." and "01." Under modify, numbering, customized, you
can set the first level to include the "DEF" text. (This example assumes
Word 2000, but I believe I recall the same or similar procedure for Word
97.)
