For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I was terminated (unfairly, of course) from my previous job and found myself
without savings, a mortgage, two car payments, multiple credit card accounts
due and other debts, a wife and a child. Flat broke, without job prospects
in site, slandered by my former supervisor, and to say the least, I was
scared and lost. The employer I worked for before this heard what happened
and immediately contacted me to offer me a job. I had been unemployed for
about 10 days and was sort of desperate, which they presumed. Therefore, I
accepted their offer, which was about 30% less than I was making at the time
I was let go.
This happened a little over two years ago and I'm still working with this
employer. I just recently received a raise to the same salary I was at
previously (after two years).
To this day, I sometimes regret giving in so easy and not holding out for
longer, until something better came along. But as soon as I see my
daughter's happy face, that regret fades away. Although I am extremely
disappointed, frustrated, and unhappy with my current employer, I know that
some day, because of my positive contributions, I will reap what I have sown
and deserve. As George Elliot once said, "It is never too late to be what
you might have been."
Have a great day!
