Dan Hall asked:

My own experience has not been similar. The large company I currently work
for is very careful about legal licensing. The very small companies I've
worked for in the past have all been very careful, also. I think both large
and small shared a healthy respect for lawsuits and bad press but I also
think that basic honesty and personal and professional integrity figured
largely in their decision to be legal. It was easier to see those traits in
the small companies because I knew the principals/decision makers.
