The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
One of the biggest gripes I hear in this line of work is that our
contributions are not valued. I have felt that way in the past (and
occasionally still do), but for the most part I got over it.
To me, it seems that documentation is usually considered a necessary evil:
ya gotta have it, but it's not sexy. (I must confess that I tend to feel
that way about OTHER jobs that I'm not interested in, no matter how vital
they may be to my company's well-being.) Thus, you will probably NEVER
have somebody come up and tell you that your documentation bought tears to
their eyes; that your clever use of fonts and white space made them swoon.
Sorry.
I've found that when you work for a company that feels this way, the best
course of action is to shut up and write. Your "appreciation" should
manifest itself every week or so in a paycheck that is MUCH larger than
one you'd receive for virtually any other steady writing job (unless your
last name is Grisham or King).
