Another interesting thing about it is the OED Project (I think it was called) - an online version of the OED. This was a remarkable project that converted the OED into a vast hypertext, back in the old days before your inlaws all had their own web pages. It was done by Frank Tompa and Daryl Raymond (spelling???) at U. of Waterloo in Canada. Ther devised an Entity-Relationship diagram for the thing, used their own GML (SGML was too rigorous), and set to work.

So they pioneered hyperText as a database and GML (today XML) as a database format. Very cool stuff - very much worth a look if you can get your hands on it.
