In Virginia where I live, the maximum unemployment rate is $268.00 per week
regardless of your previous annual rate). They will take out the Federal
Tax if you ask. Do It.
When you go in to file, you will fill in some forms. The unemployment
people will run your numbers, and let you know what you have coming and how
long it will last.
After this is done, you report (by phone) each week, and keep a record of
your 'contacts'. a minimum of three reported each week. You are expected to
do more naturally, but the computerized reporting system only asks for
three.
As was previously stated, if you were a 1099 employee, you may not get
unemployment, as you were 'self-employed' and did not make contributions to
the Unemployment Commission. However, each case is different and you need
to go in and file.
I have had W2 (with bennies), W2 (without Bennies), AND 1099. Each time I
was able to get some compensation, but never less than the 'maximum'. The
rate does NOT reflect your annual.
I am NOT providing legal advice, and the experiences that I cite are mine
alone.
By all means, go in and file. All they can do is say no, but you have
enrolled and you would stay on the books for quite a time, and might qualify
later.
