I have four std table types in my autotexts. They are good for a basis, but
splitting cells and merging rows doesn't always have consistant results with
more complex formatting.
Your last point is much more relevant, if ONLY I could save my custom
formatting as a std table def :-(

Yeah, what he said. The AutoText feature is handy for
this task if it is required in multiple documents. Store
it as a toolbar button if you like.
On a related matter, I've never understood why Microsoft
Wad doesn't allow saving custom table formats under its
on-the-verge-of-being-almost-not-useless Table AutoFormat
function, but then who are we to question the Will of the
Unknowable?
