Yes, I am one of the four who has answered "significantly overpaid." And
yes, Dan Hall, you're right...I'd be crazy to admit this without
anonymity.
Last year, I went from making $63,000/year at my job in the North San
Francisco Bay Area to making $100,000/year writing for a company that lets
me 100% telecommute (I moved to an area that has absolutely no technical
writing opportunities...that's a bit scary). I fly into the office every
3-4 months, spend a week there, and then head back home.
I'm not doing anything that's that much more technical than I was before,
but I guess this company puts more of an emphasis on having technical,
technical writers. (I count myself in this category.)
So, yes, I am overpaid...I would have taken $70K, was hoping for $80K, and
thought that I'd be ecstatic if they offered me $85K (my recruiter had
told me they'd likely offer me buckets of money...he wasn't kidding). I
had to try really hard to not let my jaw hit the floor when the head of
R&D asked the head engineer (they were both interviewing me) if he
thought I was worth $90, or $100K.
It'll be hard to suck it up and go back to a normally-paying job when/if
this stint ends. Believe you, me, I'll be the one kicking and screaming as
I'm escorted from my office. Oh, wait, my office is my bedroom. Well, you
know what I mean!
