I once worked with someone (an engineer of manager level, not title) who was
rather put off by my comment to a co-worker at lunch that my low-speed
Celeron was just too underpowered for what I did. He asked me (not that he
was included in the conversation, but he always felt it necessary to give
his 2¢ anyway) "Why would you need a fast machine? You're a tech writer! You
don't need a powerful machine to run Word." I then explained to him what I
did there. The following Monday I received a development-grade Pentium III.
:)
For those curious, I was running FrameMaker, WebWorks Publisher and
Dreamweaver for documentation/help, and was using various other tools to
develop database-driven Help systems for part of our product.
Oh, and I was called a "Technical Writer", even though I was also a
manager-level employee by office hierarchy and involvement. But, it's hard
to be a manager of one (myself).

One gig I had, my manager told the IS people I was a Help Systems Programmer
so
they wouldn't argue about giving me the equipment I needed to document ( did
both online and hard copy) the application. If he'd told them I was a tech
writer, they'd have insisted on giving me a POS machine with WordPerfect for
DOS
(and this was in '95!) instead of the NT Workstation with all the necessary
software (as in Word and RoboHelp).
