<<Besides.. the technology is new and expensive...wait until it reaches
critical mass>>

<< The problem with e-book is that it was hyped as giving us a resolution
above your average computer screen. It doesn't do that.>>

<<Needless to say, ebooks have a long way to go before they beat traditional
books for these purposes.>>

<< What's truly surprises me is that nobody's yet figured out a reasonable
model for converting a paperback novel into an eBook and making money at
it.>>

Having performed evaluations on the usability of e-books, I found some
advantages in using the device for the distribution of documentation. There
is an extrinsic value in a training environment where the
instructors/students are located at multiple remote sites, the classroom
does not have a computer at the students' desk, or the revision cycle is
frequent.
For example, if an instructor requires an update to a large manual based on
lesson plan changes, technical errors, or engineering modifications, the
instructor can enable the e-book to download the revised material from the
web, without having new material shipped around the globe. Lead time and
shipping costs are almost eliminated and the e-book can be priced and sold
as training material. The e-book is also much lighter in an
instructor's/student's suitcase/briefcase than a 3,000-page manual. By using
a dual-page layout and "rendered" 300 dpi resolution (anti-aliasing), the
e-book is not just another pretty face. The e-book concept may be of greater
value in a multinational instructor-lead training environment than for
personal use.
