Sarah,
The US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) has a highly regarded graduate school
that offer course in a wide variety of subjects, including Technical
Writing. The classes are open to anyone and there is no admission
procedure, so you can just register for a class. In fact, a class begins
tonight at 6 p.m and another one starts in January. I don't know where the
BLS office is and how convenient it would be for you to get to but the
class is held in a building one block from the Mall. A person in my office
who is thinking about becoming a technical writer has enrolled in the
class.
