Do you know HTML?
If not, learn it. It won't take long. And while you're at it, learn
Photoshop at the same time, and develop some basic web design skills. I've
used these skills on every tech writing job I've had, and none of them had
initially asked for that skill set.
Most companies I've seen will welcome ANY differentiating skill you can
bring to the party. I developed graphic skills (using a free download of
an early version of Paint Shop Pro) in conjunction with learning web
design, and have ended up being both the web and graphics "guru" in each
job I've had, by default.
It's the "by default" thing that's surprised me. HTML is easy, yet I'm
amazed at the number of people working in software companies (even
"e-commerce" companies) who don't know it. It can be a big advantage to be
the expert on your team.
