In a former life, one of the things we tried to do is to
assign a "buddy" to every new employee. This could be a
person in the same department as the newbie, but not a
supervisor. Having a "buddy" allows the newbie to ask
those embarassing questions like "what's the CEO's name?"
and "is it okay to call New Jersey from here?" from
someone non-threatening.
It seemed to work okay for the short time it was in
effect (before we laid everyone off and went into a
hiring freeze and got bought and never did it again,
that is).
