It took me a YEAR to get hired at my first "real" tech
writing job (in a large department at a major
company). I contacted them in 1982, went on
informational interviews, made friends with people,
wrote thank-you letters, submitted applications, and
finally got hired through an agency in the fall of
1983. In the meantime I had a couple of unsatisfactory
jobs at small companies, and did temp work.
