I'm told that the Microsoft Technical Support desk says they do not
recommend Word for documents over 25 pages. Plainly, it was never
intended to handle book-length projects.

Yes, he's right, Word is OK, but I would change
"small" to about 10 pages with graphics or 50 without
graphics -- and no complex bulleted/numbered lists
with special margins. Even with styles, and I am an
old hand with Word styles, these lists seemed to
bounce left and right on the page at random. Renumber themselves, too.
