Thanks to all who sent suggestions. It turns out the PDF file in question
did contain certain "embedded subset" fonts that I don't have, and that is
why I cannot convert it from PDF to editable RTF.
BTW, in Acrobat 5.0, a PDF's font information can be viewed from:
File > Document Properties > Fonts.
