TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I was discussing my work history with some of the help desk techies. They
were amazed at the variety of technical jobs that I had held in the past
(help desk, computer repair, asst. network admin, programmer, etc). They
wanted to know why I had taken a step **down** to documentation
specialist/technical writer. I want to know, why is it a step down? As a
technical writer, I am being paid more then in my other jobs (admittedly
most of them were during college and I never did know my own worth). I
feel, as a word smith, I have a much more satisfying job that requires me to
be more knowledgeable on a variety of subjects and to become an expert on
topics that I would otherwise not have access too. It seems to be a more
demanding on the gray matter then simply being a master of one domain. Plus
once you fix a sentence, it doesn't break again. <g> Any one know why a
step down?
