Cash really isn't a large motivation for the average developer. Many simply want
to code, and maybe get some recognition for the elegance of their code. It might
seem like an affectation to an outsider, but many developers think of their work
as an art, or at least as a craft.
It's called being inner-directed. At its worst, this attitude leads to egotism
of the sort you describe, but, at its best, it leads to job satisfaction and
people who know what they want.
I can respect that, take it for all.
