I got a good tip from a US Wage and Hour guy when I was on a contract in Houston (the dispute revolved around getting time and a half for overtime, and his position was that, yeah, I was owed the money, but, no, the federal government was not going to devote taxpayer resources to helping someone at my income level).

He suggested checking the Yellow Pages for lawyers board certified in the specialty (in my case employment law, in your case intellectual property law). It was easy to sift out the big display ads from ambulance chasers and go to the professional listings.

I'm not sure that every city has such a page (analogous to restaurants listed by ethnic type). But if your phone book has one and nobody you know offers a referral, this is a good place to start.
