Marguerite: Please share the recipe for your success where people thanked
you (see below) during a layoff. I think that's valuable information for the
listserv members.
..........................
It was really a result of what had gone on in the months and years before
the layoff occurred.
It was a small, highly participative company that had been bought out by a
larger corporation, which cherry-picked the projects they wanted and
eventually cut the rest. The people we had to let go were on cut projects.
Nobody perceived that anyone thought less of them as people or as
professionals. This was a group that had survived a lot of adversity,
including the mysterious disappearance and death of my predecessor. We had
pulled together and respected each other.
As a manager, I had permission to share a lot of information with people.
The key thing, I think, was the climate of openness and trust that had been
built up within the smaller company. The fact that the rest of us were
clearly hurting, too, helped somewhat. The severance package was generous. I
also helped them network their way into new jobs. Those of us who are still
in the area still get together socially from time to time, and we're in
email contact (and still share job leads).
So I can't claim any credit, really. That belongs to the people who created
the kind of work environment that made the separation work.
