I used SGML at a prior employer (a major mutual fund
company), and it was a wonderful experience. As a
writer, it allowed me to focus exclusively on the
content while our first-class technology group (DTP
types) focused on design and delivery. At first it was
difficult giving up control over font selection, the
bullets I used, and so on, but it got easier over
time.
If you want to maximize your SGML implementation, my
advice is that you hire an SGML expert who can set up
and maintain the tools that you'll use. SGML is a very
powerful way to create and publish documentation.
