I hate to be a "me too"er, but I'm also opposed to the idea. Unions build arbitrary barriers between labor and management and create, by their very nature, an adversarial relationship.
In the case of the inhumane workplaces that spurred the creation of most existing unions, that adversarial relationship already existed. In my job, the only obstacle I have to talking directly to my boss about any issues I might have is finding an opening on his calendar. Why would I want in intermediary when direct communication is easier anyway?
I'm not saying that they don't have their place--in fact the International Woodworkers saved my family from financial ruin when my father's employer tried to fire him after he hurt his back on the job--but our field is just not that place.
As several others have pointed out, all a union would accomplish for most of us is diverting a portion of our paychecks to the pockets of the people running it. Count me way out.
