TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
About the time of the industrial era, laborers suffered horrible afflictions
as a result of working in cold mines and knitting mills - diseases such as
black lung and loss of limbs was common. The need for union representation
and solidarity was apparent. In the 1960's union power reached a pinnacle
with the presence of Hoffa - a powerful and controversial leader of the
Teamsters Union (a.k.a. the Don Corleone School of Business ; -) ), often
alleged to have ties to organized crime. The results of Union tactics were
escalating wages, kickbacks, and an inflexible overpaid workforce. Companies
could not substantiate laborers' exorbitant wages, and started to move their
workforce to Developing countries.
As Technical Writers we are a professional, intellectual, empowered, and
well informed labor force that has access to many legal resources and
legislative labor codes (many of the resources are on the internet). Most of
us do not work in a "Shmata" nor do we expose ourselves to unsanitary and
hazardous environments. At worst we have to put up with "Big Brother" e-mail
content filters. Unions - not my cup of tea.
