When I first started work I was in a Union (mandatory at the time for
Govt. work) - we even came close to going on strike once. And the reason
for this? The company (TW specialists) gave split raises in salary each
year - basic rise + merit rise. It was obvious that the only people who
ever got a merit rise were those (the writers) with the clout to bugger
off somewhere else - clerical/admin/etc staff got the basic rise and
nothing else, no matter how they shone during the year. We eventually go
the system changed. So even in the so called high tech industry unions
can make a difference.
Same company, when I asked for a transfer to another office said it was
against company policy. So I found a job where I wanted to go and
suddenly it was of course we'll move you, have a large pay rise as well
(30+% as I remember)!
Like so many things you get out what you put in - for an effective union
you need to be involved to ensure you get the sort of union you want,
otherwise it can be hi-jacked by people who give it the kind of
reputation that been mentioned in this thread.
