Awwww, you gave it a good effort, Bruce. :-)

I will offer this concession:

In many industries, unions have helped employees that were being
exploited. In the 60s and 70's I think unions had a place in many
manufacturing and agricultural industries to help defend unskilled and
migrant workers from companies that were not being fair with them.
workers.

But, we live in a very different time and most of us work in a very
different industry. I am sorry but you cannot compare melon picking to
technical writing. Our work is intellectually challenging, requiring a
great deal of education, experience, and capability. Those migrant workers
and people who push bolts into brackets could never do what we do. And I
would hazzard to guess that none of us would want to do what they do.

I used to wait tables when I was in college. Its good, hard work. But, it
wasn't my life. I have moved on and I don't need other people to protect
me. I learned how to protect myself.

In other words - We should be smart enough to protect ourselves. If you
can write a complex document about databases or microchips, you should be
able to defend yourself from greedy corporate bosses.
