"One culture check I use (from both sides of the interview table) is to see
how easy it is to make the other folks
laugh."

My turn to chime in again.

I was the first tech writer hired at my current company. (We now have a
grand total of two.). The guys (only two other women here when I was hired)
had never interviewed a tech writer before, and interviewed me as if I was a
programmer. They gave me two brain teasers to solve. I solved the first
one in less than a minute; they were mangling the presentation of the second
one, so I restated the problem before they finished it and gave them the
answer besides (it was an "oldie" from my days as a math teacher). I then
gave them one that they couldn't solve, and they hired me practically on the
spot.

A large part of the interview process is to figure out whatever game the
interviewer is playing, and turn the tables on him or her.

As far as bribing the programmers with cookies...I thought everyone did
that! I also collect toys to use as icebreakers. My little
motion-sensitive packing crate that cries "Let me outa here! Hey, you! Help
me!" has shown up on desks, in the ceiling of a room, and inside a new
hire's computer. (Every time the hard drive is accessed, it cries out....)
