It's not that tech writers do not have the desire to do these things, but we
don't have the time. No one pays me to conduct independent research.
I'm going to keep up to date on the latest studies, as soon as I have a
break at work ... :)
Yeah, me too. That's what I meant to say. Really. :-)
But your comment supports my point: tech-writers are a practical lot.
Nobody pays doctors to keep up on independent research, but they feel obliged to do so, feel somewhat ashamed when they don't manage to, and reserve their greatest respect for those who are doing research or pioneering new techniques. Even if some doctors are only in the profession for the money, the profession as a whole has an academic orientation that tech-writers just don't have. I'm not sure whether this difference is a good or a bad thing, but it's there.
