Michelle's approach makes sense in the context of what I suggested previously in this thread: tools are there to help us execute what we conceive. If we teach students about structured markup and how that discipline can help with the rhetorical problem of organizing topics for presentation, and then allow the students to practice with tools that implement a structured markup paradigm (such as html), we are doing more than teaching a tool; we are teaching an integrated system that encompasses both rhetorical and execution. If we teach about the _concept_ of styles in terms of structuring information, and we let the students practice with a publishing program that implements styles, we are reinforcing the theoretical values of document design and readability with the practical values of working efficiently and effectively.
So why are we fighting about this?
