TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Here's a question for the list (and I know I'm going to get a LOT of
different answers!):
Let's say your kid (OK, he's 18 and much bigger than I am!) says he
WANTS
to get into technical writing and knowledge management. What course of
undergraduate study would you recommend, and why?
====================
I would definitely say Computer Science. I have a much easier time talking
to the developers and getting them to do what I ask because I understand the
code. And it is always a shot in the arm when I find something in the code
that isn't quite right. ;-} (evil grin)
I think Tech Writing is a good "first career" I have been working non stop
since grad school.
