TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I am a grad student studying Technical Communication at NIU. Over the
course of my studies I have encountered many scholarly definitions of the
field of Technical Communication, and I have begun to wonder if those
definitions apply to the practical world. To this end I am conducting a
survey of practicing technical communicators in order to gather their
definitions of the field.
If you are a professional technical communicator, and would like to
participate in this study, I would welcome your insight. All of the
participants in this study will remain confidential. Though I will be
gathering some demographic information, I will not use these items to
identify or refer to any participant.
By responding to this survey you are signaling your consent to have your
responses used confidentially in my research.
The following is the survey:
1. Where do you live? City, State, and Country (If not the U.S.)
2. What is your job title/description?
3. Please define technical communication briefly in your own words.
You may submit your answers to gobldgk -at- hotmail -dot- com -dot-
Thank You,
James W. Curnalia
