Not to upstage Bruce's excellent advice,I'd suggest Mandrake for anyone who wants to try Linux, but doesn't want to get too deeply into its configuration and other technical details. It is by far the best version of Linux for the desktop or new user. The only caveat is that Mandrake seems to have been rushing its releases recently, and the bugs don't really get stomped until a couple of months after the release date.

issue of PC Magazine.
The biggest concern for anyone is be sure you know basic information about your hardware (such as monitor resolutions) and where your Windows partition is (if you are going to keep it on the machine that has Linux). But having the hardware manuals around is a good idea even when you're installing Windows, and if you can't find basic systeminformation, you probably shouldn't be installing any operating system.
