>>So, how _does_ one teach students (or new tech writers)
how do be resourceful? Or how does one find resourceful
writers to hire? Or distinguish between resourceful
or non-resourceful writers?
<snip>
I've had my share of experiences with non-resourceful
writers, and the experiences were pretty frustrating
and painful for all concerned. That said, I'd like
to be able to quantify "resourceful" in terms more
definitive than "I know it when I see it".<<
I was once asked during a job interview how I'd find out how many gas
stations there were within a 10-mile radius of the office if I couldn't
used the phone book and I couldn't drive around. Same interviewer asked
me how I found about a new technologies. Both were obviously questions
about resourcefulness.
Resourcefulness is related to creativity, discipline and working hard.
I've taken pen-and-paper test that were supposed to measure creativity,
and to some extent, you can determine through the kind of questions you
ask whether a candidate is disciplined and works hard. But I think all
four -- especially resourcefulness -- are traits that are at least as
much subjective as objective.
