I've found that the easiest way to use HTML created from Word is to bring
it into Dreamweaver, where they have specifically created a "Clean Up
Word HTML" command that does a nice job of stripping out the crap.

Microsoft also released a tool that does something similar, but I can't
find the link for it right now... maybe someone else can jump in with a
URL.
