Geoff says: "Moreover, while degree requirements are often imposed
retroactively to affect _future_ promotions, I haven't often heard about
them being used to demote employees."
Actually, this used to be the practice in some companies before people
started enforcing discrimination laws.
My former father-in-law was the head of payroll at a large factory in our
area for nearly 30 years. At the age of 58, someone in the head office in
Pittsburgh noticed that he only had a two-year certificate in accounting.
Suddenly, he was given the choice of being demoted to a gate guard or taking
a nice retirement package. He chose early retirement. It was common
practice at the company for a long time to do this until someone (not my
father-in-law) had the guts to put a stop to this.
