I guess I'm just out of step. I thought it was a fairly decent piece
reviewing the basics of procmail in just enough detail that I could get
it running on a BSD box or a Mac OSX box.
Of course I may be wrong, but I would suspect that an O'Reilly site with
a name like "BSD Dev" might just be targeted at *nix geeks ;) YMMV

That's probably the case here. procmail is used mainly by those who use
a text-based e-mail reader; for most people, the filtering system in
their graphical browsers is enough for sorting their mail. Those who use
a text e-mail reader are likely to be fairly hardcore geeks, and
therefore not likely to miss clear instructions or full explanations. In
fact, they probably want just enough so that they can start playing
around for themselves.
