You really should look into some science, math, and technology oriented
classes. This will help you much more in the long haul. I would recommend
learning Windows 2000, Linux, systems networking, programming (C is a good
starter), and relational databases. These are "core" technologies used in
many different industries. Understanding these technologies will help you
better understand the technologies of your employers.
The tools will change over time. If you know the basics of help systems,
HTML, graphics, and a word processor, you're as far as you need to be to
get started. Remember, most technical writing is figuring out complex
technologies. Using the tools is almost ancillary.
