Re: Time for a Change
I'd like responses on this thread to be made on-list, please. I'm also looking for a change; while I'm happy to do user guides, I'd really, really prefer to be doing them for something other than accounting or network systems. Surely there are technical writers or the equivalent in computer gaming companies, academia, or the like?
Yes, technical writers are everywhere, but often under different job titles.
What are you most interested in doing? Research those industries and find out which jobs use your skills. Be creative in interpreting what your skills really are. I don't mean lying, but consider what you really do. Techwriters often do a vast range of things that we may consider part of "writing" but other people wouldn't think of that way: research, interviewing, design, graphics, usability, testing, programming, and so on and on.
Then rework your resume and market yourself as whatever you need to, to get into an area that interests you. You might also need to add another skill or two to your repertoire, depending on the area you want to move into, but don't be afraid to apply for jobs where you don't meet the formal requirements.
