This site is a cornucopia of things NOT to do. In most cases the thing you
should do is pretty obvious, or stated.
If your choices are wide open, there are many pre-fab content management
packages already out there, and many are free for the having. Take a loook
at some of the pre-built packages for php or zope. There are many in perl as
well. Most of these packages include all the basics, like formatting
templates, a pre-built database, authentication, and so forth. The big sell
is that such systems tend to make maintaining and updating a site easier. It
may be overkill depending on what you are doing, but if you are starting
from scratch, you may as well take a look at what people have already done
before you reinvent the wheel.
