If you were thinking about an article on the subject, Eric, I hope you haven't changed your mind. It needs to be taught and talked about far more than it ever is (which is why I think it a pity that the original poster seems to have chosen to reject Andrew's advice).
Drawing connections, making analogies, and seeing the higher level structure are all invaluable for organizing information. Moreover, lack of these skills is probably responsible for more muddy thinking than anything else, even personal bias.
But I pontificate. The point is, if Eric or anyone else cares to write an article on the subject, I'd be interested in seeing how they developed it.
