TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Bruce says, "I'd say that, if you persevere for six months to a
year, you should be able to make the transition. If you're organized and
have a bit of luck, you could reduce that time by half or two-thirds."
When I did my big career change (education to tech writer), it took me six
months to get my break. I had to settle for a much lower salary than I
wanted (about 2/3 of what I was asking for, and half of what I now make).
If you can handle a lot of rejection, though, it is well worth it.
One thing that I did was create my own website. It is not very fancy, but
my resume is now searchable online. I had one person invite me in for an
interview, and started out by saying, "I don't think you have the skills we
are looking for, but I just wanted to meet someone who could write that many
WebPages with no misspellings!"
