(Maggie mentioned how annoying it is that many people
think they can be writers.)
The root of the problem is the plethora of career
books that feature such titles as, "25 Great Jobs for
Career Changers," or "Make a Living as a Freelance
Writer in 6 Months." These books make career changes
look easy, without regard to whether one has the
necessary skills.
This phenomenon is not unique to technical writing.
You often see public relations, consulting, web
design, and interior design listed, too. The
self-proclaimed experts writing these books are wiping
out any sense of respect that these professions have
earned.
It's downright insulting!
