The overall item may be referred to as an assembly. If the components on the
item are also assembled items, then you could describe the item as an
assembly consisting of assembled components or, alternatively, an assembly
consisting of several sub-assemblies.
Depending on how you describe the item, it would also be proper to describe
it as an assembled item. The description of the item as either an assembly
or an assembled item is often predicated on how you describe the item and
how you intend to use the term. For example, you might say that the XYZ
assembly is inserted into the MegaBox 2000 prior to shipping. Or, it would
also be correct to say that when the assembled XYZ component is inserted
into the MegaBox 2000 housing, it will become one of 17 replaceable
sub-assemblies that provides the functionality to the MegaBox 2000. Either
form is correct, it just depends on how you intend to use it.
Also, notice that, from the grammatical perspective, using the word
'assembly' to describe the unit is the noun form of the word. When the unit
is described as an 'assembled item', the word 'assembled' is used as an
adverb. So, it all depends on how you intend to use the terminology as to
which form is correct.
Hope this helps. I'm sure that the other members of the list can provide
explanations that may make it easier to understand the proper usage, but
that's how I understand it.
Regards,
Pete Sanborn
