Maybe (and this is a purely hypothetical maybe) it's similar to choosing
employees who perform volunteer work or community service. It speaks to
their character.
As someone who worked for a trade association, I learned first-hand the
value such organizations can have for "newbie" professionals. The key to
that, however, is the mentorship role that "seasoned" professionals fill.
The seasoned professionals offers an immense amount of insight and guidance
to newbies. Their input often has a great impact on the way the industry
changes over the years, in a large part because they influence the
up-and-comers.
Unfortunately, the people who have years and years of experience and a great
deal of knowledge probably don't get a lot out of a professional group such
as STC. That is, unless you count the personal satisfaction of helping
others. When I worked at the trade association, I interviewed many people
who had belonged for years and were highly active. Almost all of them
described their reasons for belonging as a need to "give back." They had
received guidance from other members early in their careers and wanted the
opportunity to offer the same to the newest round of young professionals.
That's my reason for belonging to STC. I soak up as much knowledge and
unique viewpoints from other members as I can in the hopes that I'll someday
be able to share my own expertise with others.
