The grammar checker does serve a purpose--I do enjoy running it every now
and then when I need a good laugh.
Another feature I haven't seen mentioned that drives me bonkers is the
"automatic" page numbering. It gets in my way all the time. I'm writing
away, then I want to print one page, and Word says, "wait a minute, I need
to repaginate all of this 236-page document before I let you print page
one." And then the computer cranks its gears for 15 minutes before the job
is queued. Or, I'm paging through a document, and reach one page I want to
print. I "print current page," then realize that a totally different page
went to the printer, because "current page" means the one the cursor is on
(not the one I'm looking at). Frame doesn't lead you on like that.
The first job I had at Microsoft was indexing a 3-volume manual. I was
saved from total insanity by the fact that our department had a
finish-person who was in charge of page numbering and producing the final
paged document. As it was, I had to work several weekends just to work
around the unique page numbering system.
