TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I think Andrew hit it pretty much on the mark here. In doing the lit
review for my thesis, the STC intercom articles seemed less substantive
upon close review. The STC journal seemed to be better in terms of
content, but most of the information I gathered came from sources other
than STC journals.
I?ve also belonged to three different STC chapters and have seen a wide
variety in the quality of the chapters. The STC chapters in Little Rock
and at Iowa State had decent meetings. They talked about relevant issues
related to technical writing. When I moved to Texas, I never went to my
local chapter meetings because the topics were not relevant to technical
writing.
I let my membership lapse a few years ago, but am going to rejoin
because
I happen to be working in a technical field at the moment where
memberships seem to matter.

Andrew writes:
People always ask me why I hate STC so much...I don't hate it, I just
don't find it very relevant. STC (based on their magazines, seminars,
and
general tone of everything they produce) caters to non-technical,
non-writers. People who spend their career formatting and reorganizing
OTHER people's work.
