Why does technical writing have to lead to something else? I am perfectly happy writing manuals, doing online help, and the occasional website.

How about a dentist? Do teeth change over the years? No, but techniques do, as in technical writing. When I started out in technical writing there was no real "online help". This evolved, as will other new techniques.

Not every profession requires a carrier path.
