re: I can't help wondering: does society place too much emphasis on getting
along with everybody in the workplace?
Here is some pertinent (IMHO) material from a recent Forbes magazine article
from the Web Oct 3, 2001. It's titled "A Breath of Fresh Air" and was
written by Jerry Flint:
A breath of fresh air is blowing across General Motors. It comes from
Robert Lutz, the former Chrysler president, who, at 69, was picked to lead
GM's vehicles out of the wilderness of drab. ... (Lutz has written:) "Happy
contented employees, and an environment where nobody argues or disagrees,
and everyone compromises because the other person has goals, too, is usually
not the culture that produces great shareholder value. A performance-driven
culture is often a difficult place to work, and it certainly isn't
'democratic.' Democracy and excessive consensus building slow the process
and result in lower-common-denominator decisions. As Larry Bossidy, former
CEO of Allied Signal [now chairman of Honeywell], so aptly said: 'Tension
and conflict are necessary ingredients of a successful organization.'"
Personally, I think there may sometimes be Venus/Mars problems with this,
but I won't go any farther there.
