Anthony asked about "standard" proofing marks. Besides the online and print
resources others on the list have recommended, I highly recommend
"Copyediting: A Practical Guide" by Karen Judd (at Amazon in paperback at http://www.igive.com/html/fmsw.cfm?vendorid=259&uuid=570927812305). This was
the text for the copyediting course I took ten (!) years ago, and it's
excellent.
It's a very handy text. The standard copyediting and proofing symbols are
inside the front cover (of the hardcover book, at any rate) for easy
reference. And, if you want to brush up on your copyediting and proofing
skills, you can always delve inside for review and even some exercises.

Lydia
